Can You Shrink a Wig?

Believe it or not, it is possible to shrink a wig much like you would shrink some jeans or a tee-shirt. Some wigs will shrink a little bit in warm water, depending on the materials in the cap. Other wigs will not shrink.

For the most part, though, the best way to shrink a wig is by following the tightening methods we’ve detailed below.

How Can I Make My Wig Bigger?

If you’ve bought a new wig and it’s too small for you, you may need to stretch the cap to achieve a good fit. To make a wig bigger, you need to loosen the cap’s adjustment straps. Make sure these are at the loosest setting and try the wig again.

If it’s too loose, tighten the straps in increments to try the wig after each adjustment until you get the right fit.

Is it better to have a wig too big or too small?

It’s better to have a wig too big than small, for a wig that’s too small, it’s going to be very tight and uncomfortable. Wearing a wig that is too small may affect the blood flow and cause headaches, hair loss, or even damage your hairline. While wearing a wig that is too big may result in an unnatural look but nothing much like health issues.

The best thing is to have a wig that is not too big or small.

Before you start adjusting your wig, you’ll need to take some preparatory steps, which require you to break out your measuring tape. This section will tell you how to prepare for the wig adjustment process.

Measure your Head:

You’ll begin by measuring your head. You will need a soft measuring tape and a nylon wig cap for this step. Follow the below steps to do it:

1. Flatten your hair how you normally would for wig-wearing. Most people braid their hair down while others slick it down or tie it back into a bun.

2. Put on a wig cap if you usually do when you wear wigs. Pull it over your head and ensure that the front of it is pulled down about a half inch behind your natural hairline.

3. Measure your head’s circumference (around your hairline and behind your ears) and from ear to ear (across your crown). If you want to see a diagram of where to place the tape, along with some tips on where to place the tape for the correct measurement, read our guide on how to measure your head for a wig.

4. Take note of all of your head measurements and move on to the next step.
